What does pax mean in hotels?

Pax is travel-industry shorthand for the number of people. In a hotel it is the number of guests in a booking, a room or an event: a room booked for 2 pax has two guests, and a banquet for 150 pax is priced and catered for 150 people.

Where pax matters

The guest count changes what a hotel charges and prepares:

  • Room rates: single, double and extra-person pricing depend on the pax in the room
  • Meal plans: breakfast and other meals are counted per person
  • Banquets: packages are usually priced per pax, with a guaranteed minimum
  • Registration: every guest in the room has to be recorded, not only the person who booked

Adults and children

Bookings usually split pax into adults and children, because child policies differ: a child below a set age may stay free, or pay a lower extra-bed charge. State your policy clearly, as OTAs pass the adult and child counts through with the booking.

Common questions

What does 2 pax mean?
