What is a day-use room?

A day-use room is a hotel room sold for part of the day, typically a block of hours between the morning and early evening, without an overnight stay. Hotels near airports, stations, hospitals and business districts use day-use and hourly stays to earn from rooms that would otherwise sit empty until the evening.

How it is sold

Day-use is sold either as a fixed daytime rate or in hourly slots, such as three, six or nine hours. The price is lower than a night's rate. Many hotels ask for prepayment and apply a separate cancellation policy.

The operational catch

The same room may be sold again that night, so it has to be cleaned in between, and the day-use booking must not overlap the overnight guest's arrival. That means allowing a cleaning buffer after each stay and keeping day-use and overnight bookings in one availability calendar.

In StaySynq

StaySynq supports up to six hourly slots and a day-use rate per room type, with a cleaning buffer, sharing one availability calendar with overnight stays.

Common questions

Is GST charged on day-use rooms?

Yes. A day-use stay is accommodation, so it is taxed like a room night on the amount charged. Confirm the treatment with your accountant.
